Lot 1123
SICILY. Syracuse (?). Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Litra (Silver, 11 mm, 0.59 g). Diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing single-pendant earring and necklace. Rev. Σ-Υ/R-A Wheel of four spokes. Boehringer pl. 29, B 36 (same dies). Rare. Slightly rough, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Boehringer suggests that this and related litrai were not struck in Syracuse, but by one of the neighboring native cities such as Henna or Herbessos. While this may be true, the severe and consistent style points towards a Greek origin.
